Escalante Petrified Forest State Park: look, don’t take
This park exists so people can see petrified wood in place. It is a Utah State Park, not a BLM collecting area. The wood on the trail is the exhibit.

No collecting without written authorization from the park. Pocketing a chip “because BLM allows 25 pounds” is the wrong rulebook.
Why people get this wrong
You can drive from park boundary toward other public land in the same afternoon. The material looks identical. The owner does not. Read the state-parks page and the petrified-wood page on this site before you mix the two trips.
What to do instead
- Walk the trails. Photograph the logs.
- If you want pieces to take home, leave the park, check the ownership layer, and only collect on confirmed open BLM under the cap.
- Do not “just take the scraps in the campground gravel.”
