Coolers for west-desert day hunts

The job
Keep water cold from Delta to the Thomas Range and back when the cab is 100°F+. Soft six-packs die. A 45–65 quart hard cooler is overkill for a solo day hunt and perfect for two people plus samples you should not leave in the sun.
Two setups
- Day hunt: 20–30 quart hard cooler or a serious high-ice-ratio soft cooler. Pre-chill. Block ice over cubes. Water in bottles already frozen.
- Overnight / two-day: 45–65 quart rotomolded. Don’t cheap out if the truck stays in the sun.
What to ignore
Brand wars. Ice retention numbers from a garage test in Ohio. You need lid seal, latch that still works with dusty hands, and a size you can lift when it’s full of water and agate you already collected too much of.
